Heeia Kea General Store & Deli losing chef to new venture

Chef Mark Noguchi, a culinary leader in Hawaii’s locavore movement, is leaving Heeia Kea General Store & Deli at Heeia Pier after Sunday.

Noguchi said that after taking a break to return home to Hawaii island, he will come back to Oahu to begin work on opening a new food business called Pili, which means “intertwined” in Hawaiian.

Heeia Pier’s Mark Noguchi moving on

Chef Mark Noguchi, a culinary leader in Hawaii’s locavore movement, is leaving Heeia Kea Pier General Store & Deli after Sunday, July 15.

Noguchi said he is leaving to open a new food business called Pili and that his former partner at Heeia Kea, Russ Inouye, was taking the Kaneohe eatery in “a different direction.”

After taking a break to return home to Hawaii island, he said he will come back to Oahu to begin work on Pili, which means “intertwined” in Hawaiian.

Mark Noguchi, the chef who revamped rustic Heeia Pier General Store & Deli in Kaneohe, has left the restaurant. He was also a partner in the business. Noguchi will start a food venture called Pili (a Hawaiian word meaning “to be intertwined, connected”) for catering and consulting, and plans to base it on the values of community, education and food.
